A couple of weeks ago, Billy Bragg and Joe Henry came to York’s Grand Opera House, on their ‘Shine A Light’ tour.
This was to promote and showcase the album they recorded together, “Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad”.
What’s unique and interesting about this record is that they recorded it during a 4 day train journey across the States. They set up their recording devices in the station in between stops and blasted out covers by Lead Belly, Glen Campbell and Lonnie Donegan.
The album takes you on a journey across country without having to get a visa or have your passport stamped.
So back stage, just after the sound check, I sat down with Billy to ask him what was the catalyst for this ambitious idea.
